Portland Pirates Announce 20th Anniversary Bobbleheads
Hulst, Kolzig, Poapst, and Dineen to be Memorialized
 
Portland, Maine – The Portland Pirates have announced that Kent Hulst, Olaf Kolzig, Steve Poapst, and Kevin Dineen have been selected for the 20th Anniversary Season bobblehead series. The Bobblehead were chosen by fans over the summer in an online vote. The Bobblehead giveaways will take place on December 1st (Hulst), January 19th (Kolzig), March 16th (Poapst), and April 20th (Dineen).
 
Kent Hulst Bobblehead Night, presented by Bath Savings Institution, will take place on Saturday, December 1st at the Cumberland County Civic Center before the Pirates take on the Providence Bruins. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Hulst Bobblehead. Hulst, a member of the inaugural, Calder Cup Championship team, holds the Pirates record for goals (147), points (360), playoff games played (67), and game-winning goals (19). The native of St. Thomas, Ontario played 8 seasons for the Pirates, and was a 2002 inductee of the Pirates Hall of Fame presented by UNUM.
 
Olaf Kolzig Bobblehead Night, presented by UniFirst, will take place on Saturday, January 19th, 2013 at the Cumberland County Civic Center before the Pirates take on the Connecticut Whale. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Kolzig Bobblehead. Kolzig played in the 1993-’94 inaugural season, as well as parts of the ’94-‘95 and ’95-’96 seasons. Kolzig, who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa but was a German citizen, went 16-8-5 in ’93-94’, good for a 3.06 Goals Against Average and a .906 Save Percentage. Kolzig would win the Venza Trophy while in the NHL with the Washington Capitals in 2000, and played 719 NHL games, all with the Capitals. Affectionately known as “Olie the Goalie”, Kolzig had 12 wins in the 1994 postseason to lead the Pirates to the Calder Cup Championship, and was a 1999 inductee into the Pirates Hall of Fame presented by UNUM.
 
Steve Poapst Bobblehead Night, presented by Moody’s Collision Centers, will take place on Friday, March 16th, 2013 at the Cumberland County Civic Center before the Pirates take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Poapst Bobblehead. Poapst played 454 games for the Pirates, scoring 44 goals and 151 assists. He is first all time in assists and second all-time in points and games played. As a defensemen, Poapst is ranked second in franchise history in goals by a defensemen with 44, powerplay goals (17) and game-winning goals (6). Poapst was a member of the Calder Cup Championship team in ’93-’94, and was an AHL All-Star in 1995. Poapst played in 307 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues, and was a 2001 inductee into the Pirates Hall of Fame presented by UNUM.
 
Kevin Dineen Bobblehead Night, presented by Maine Eye Center, will take place on Saturday, April 20th, 2013 at the Cumberland County Civic Center before the Pirates take on the Connecticut Whale. The first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a Dineen Bobblehead. Dineen was named head coach of the Portland Pirates in 2005, and spent 6 seasons behind the Pirates bench. In his Pirates’ career, Dineen had a record of 266-155-30-29, and made the playoffs every year except the 2006-2007. Dineen is currently the head coach of the Florida Panthers of the NHL after 1188 career NHL games as a player.
 
The 20th Anniversary Bobblehead Series is the first of many special promotions that will take place this season in honor of 20 years of Pirates hockey in Portland. The Pirates will celebrate their 20th anniversary with the unveiling of the Pirates All-Time Team, a 32 event “Bracket Buster” tournament to determine the best moment in Pirates history, a line of anniversary products and merchandise, and special 20th anniversary Jerseys to be worn at select games this season.
