“1994 Calder Cup Championship” Chosen as Greatest Moment in Pirates History
Moments Chosen on Facebook as part of 20th Anniversary Celebration
Portland, MaineThe Portland Pirates’ 1994 Calder Cup Championship has been selected as the Greatest Moment in Pirates History by a vote of Pirates Fans. The “Greatest Moment in Pirates History” Bracket Buster took place on the Pirates’ official Facebook page, Facebook.com/PortlandPirates, during the month of March.
The 1994 Calder Cup Championship is the Pirates’ only Calder Cup championship, and came in their inaugural season in Portland. Pirates Hall of Fame Coach Barry Trotz led the franchise to its only Calder Cup to date, with a roster that included ten future Pirates Hall of Famers. The Pirates were able to finish the regular season in second place in the Northern Division with 96 points. In the first round of the playoffs, the Pirates knocked off the Albany River Rats in 5 games, with Portland’s Mike Boback tying an AHL playoff record for points in a game with 7 (3 goals and 4 assists). In the Division Finals, Portland got past the Adirondack Red Wings in 6 games, with Jeff Sirkka propelling Portland to the Calder Cup Finals by scoring in overtime with “The Shot Heard ‘Round Maine”. In the Calder Cup Finals, Portland was able to raise the Calder Cup at home as they dispatched of the Moncton Hawks in Game 6. Pirates’ goaltender Olaf Kolzig was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the AHL Playoff MVP.
The Greatest Moment Bracket Buster tournament featured matchups between the top 32 moments in Pirates history, including the Pirates’ 3 goals scored in 55 seconds in 1993, Martin Brochu winning the MVP award, 17.            Corey Perry’s 17-game point Streak in 2006, and Rob Klinkhammer’s 5 point Performance this season. An elimination style bracket was created, with the top vote getters advancing. The final round pitted the Calder Cup Championship against Jeff Sirkka’s “Shot Heard ‘Round Maine”, with the Calder Cup Championship receiving more than 60% of the vote. + quarter finals and semifinals

The Greatest Moment in Pirates History Bracket Buster is part of the Pirates’ 20th Anniversary Celebration, which will conclude with the Announcement  As part of their 20th Anniversary Celebration, the Pirates wore special 20th Anniversary Jerseys and sponsored a number of events, including the Pieces of Eight $8 Ticket deal and the naming of a 20th Anniversary All-Time Team, which will be announced later this month.
