Pirates use Power Play to beat Senators 4-2

10/27/2012 10:00 PM -
Lewiston, Maine – The Pirates spread the offense around, with four different goal scorers and 10 different players tallying a point, defeating the Binghamton Senators 4-2 Saturday night. The Pirates improved to 3-2-1 on the season while the Senators dropped to 3-2-1 on the season. The Pirates played in front of a rowdy sold out crowd of 3,776 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée for their second straight sellout at home.

The scoring started halfway through the 1st period whenthe Senators’ Mike Hoffman was called for delay of game. Jakob Silferberg took a mistimed Pirates pass on their power play and slapped it past goaltender Chad Johnson to give Binghamton the early 1-0 advantage. Silfverberg’s goal was the second of the season and was shorthanded.

Later in the first, a power play goal by the Pirates tied the game at one. At 15:57 of the first former Pirate Tyler Eckford of the Senators took a tripping penalty. Pirates’ defenseman David Rundblad put one on goal that captain Alexandre Bolduc tipped in just past the outstretched blocker of the Senator goalie Robin Lehner for the goal. It was Bolduc’s 6th goal of the year; good for the AHL lead, as well as the 5th straight game with a goal for the Montreal, QC native.

The second period left off right where the first period ended. In the opening minutes, both teams traded shots but it was Andy Miele who broke the tie that the Pirates would never relinquish. At 4:13 of the second period, Louie Caporusso of the Senators took a hooking penalty and Miele did not waste time. Just 14 seconds later, Miele took a magnificent pass from Chris Conner and shot it top shelf past Lehner.

The second period was a rowdy one, with multiple fights as well as many penalty minute: or both sides. Chris Brown and Mark Borowieki dropped gloves at the 7:03 mark, giving Brown the team led in fights, and Jordan Martinook took on the Sens’ Corey Cowick 15:51 into the period.

Portland extended its lead in the third when Jordan Szwartz tipped in a shot sent in from the right point by Michael Stone. Szwartz’s goal was his first of the season and came 4:36 into the period.

Portland again gave up the shorthanded opportunity, this time to Cowick, after Andre Benoit took a hooking penalty. Cowick’s shot went high over the stick side of goaltender Chad Johnson to get the Senators within one with 13:46 to play.

Portland would seal the game on a sweet pass from Andy Miele to Mathieu Brodeur, who wasted no effort in sailing it past Lehner. It was Brodeur’s first of the season, and it gave the Pirates the 4-2 advantage that they would never relinquish.

Chad Johnson picked up his second straight victory for the Pirates, stopping 38 of the 40 shots he faced and improving to 2-2-1 on the year. Lehner took the loss for Binghamton, stopping 27 of the 31 shots he faced and falling to 3-2-1 on the year.

The Pirates get back to action tomorrow with a quick turnaround, as they travel to Springfield to face the Falcons. Puck drops at 3 pm Sunday and the game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
