Worcester, MA – The Portland Pirates dropped their road opener on Sunday, as Bracken Kearns scored twice to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 3-2 victory at the DCU Center in Worcester. Andy Miele scored twice for the Pirates in the defeat.
The Pirates got on the board first for the 4th straight game as Andy Miele continued his point streak. Miele took a feed from Chris Brown and slipped it past rookie goaltender Tony Grosenick to give the Pirates the 1-0 lead. Miele’s second goal of the year, and second in two games, was also assisted by Jordan Szwarz 4:25 into the first period. The Sharks answered back with a pair of power play tallies from Bracken Kearns. Kearns’ first tally came just 2 minutes after Miele’s tally following a Brett Hextall penalty. Brodie Reid and Eriah Hayes had the assists. Reid would connect with Kearns on his second goal as well following a Pirates too many men penalty with just 40 seconds left in the first, giving Worcester the 2-1 lead. Danill Tarasov added an assist on Kearns’ second goal.
Worcester extended their lead late in the second period, as Tarasov added a goal of his own with 4:07 left in the second. Andy Miele struck back for the Pirates with a beautiful goal with 2:11 left in the 2nd, cutting the deficit to one. Connor Murphy and Brandon Gormley assisted Miele’s second of the night and third goal of the season.
Despite added pressure from the Pirates in the third, and a number of power play opportunities throughout the game, the Pirates were unable to capitalize, finishing the afternoon 0-4. Worcester finished the afternoon 2 for 7 on the power play, with both of Kearns’ goals coming on the man advantage.
The Pirates drop to 0-3-0-1 on the season while the Sharks earned their first victory of the year, snapping a 10 game winless streak at home dating back to last season. Mike Lee made 27 saves, but falls to 0-2-0-0 while Tony Grosenick won in his first professional contest for Worcester.
The Pirates get back to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Hartford to face the Wolf Pack at the XL Center. Puck drop is set for 7 PM with the pregame show starting at 6:40 with Jeff Mannix. The game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 and WTME AM 780/1450 in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
