P-Bruins Pull Away, Beat Pirates

12/01/2012 10:00 PM -

The Providence Bruins scored four unanswered goals to earn a 5-2 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center Saturday night. The Bruins benefited from a balanced attack of five different goal scorers, and now holds a 2-0 season series lead over the Pirates.

Providence would strike early. Jordan Caron took a Matt Bartkowski feed in front of the Pirates net and tucked it under the pads of Pirates’ goaltender Mark Visentin at 5:35 of the first.  Joel Rechlicz would try to get the momentum back in the Pirates favor on the ensuing faceoff, dropping the gloves with Providence tough guy Bobby Robins.  The Pirates would capitalize later in the period when Bruins’ defenseman David Warsofsky was sent off for a delay of game call at 13:56. David Rundblad would find the top corner of the net, sending a blast from the blue line past Providence starter Michael Hutchinson at 15:15 of the period for his 4th goal in as many games. Ethan Werek would then capitalize on Hutchinson mishandling the puck for his third of the year, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead at 16:45 in the first.

Chris Conner would nearly extend the Pirates’ lead early in the second. Conner put on a stick handling display to cut through the Providence defense, only to be denied by Hutchinson. The Bruins capitalized on a boarding call to Rob Klinkhammer, with Jamie Tardif finding a loose puck in front and sliding it past Visentin for his seventh goal of the season, and a tie game.  The Pirates would get a power play chance of their own just a minute later. Bartkowski would be called for boarding at 10:07. However, the Pirates only mustered one shot on the power play.

The third period started with some fireworks as Evan Brophey and Bruins forward Alden Hirschfield were sent off for fighting at 2:58 into the third. Hirschfield picked up an additional minor for kneeing. With only 3:35 left in regulation, however, Bruins defenseman Zach Trotman took a Lane MacDermid feed at the top of the slot and beat Visentin low glove side for his first of the season.  Ryan Spooner and Christian Hanson would add empty net goals to give the Bruins the 5-2 victory.

The Pirates fall back to .500 on the season to 9-9-1-1, while the Bruins improve to 9-8-0-1. Michael Hutchinson improves to 1-4-1-0, and Mark Visentin falls to 2-5-1-0.

The Pirates get back to action tomorrow in Manchester in the 4th VIP Cup Series game, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, and Service. Manchester holds a 2-1 advantage, but Portland is coming off a 3-2 overtime victory in their last meeting. For more information on the VIIP Cup, visit
