Portland, Maine—The Pirates fell to the Providence Bruins 2-1 on Saturday, in a penalty-filled game in front of crowd of 6,010 in Portland.
The Bruins kicked off the scoring early with a shot from the blue line by Bobby Robins that managed to find its way through the legs of Portland goaltender Mark Visentin at 2:08 of the first period. It was Robins’ 2nd goal of the season.
Providence found the back of the net again at 12:03 of the 2nd period during the power play. Visentin tried to clear the puck off the glass, but it took a funny bounce right to the slot where Ryan Spooner was able to put it home for an easy goal, his 3rd of the year.
Portland responded when Phil Lane took a perfect pass from Scott Arnold at 9:07 of the 3rd period, and was able to roof the puck from a seemingly impossible angle. It was Lane’s first goal of the season and the first of his professional career.
Providence was able to maintain a one goal lead for the remainder of the game, largely due to the superb play of goalie Niklas Svedberg. The Pirates’ best chances came with the extra attacker on and an empty net with just seconds to go, but Svedberg denied every shot to keep the margin at one.
Providence improves to 6-6-0-1 on the year, giving them 13 points . Portland falls to 6-6-1-1 with their second consecutive loss at home. Mark Visentin falls to 1-3-1, allowing two goals on 26 shots, while Niklas Svedberg improves to 6-2-0, stopping 36 of the 37 shots he faced on the night.
