Hartford, Conn. –The Portland Pirates traveled to Hartford Friday night and beat the Connecticut Whale by a 2-1 score in a chippy contest from the XL Center. Goaltender Chad Johnson picked up the win in his return to Connecticut, stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced.
The first two periods were scoreless, but were not without incident. In the first, Chris Brown dropped the gloves with Haley, with Haley getting the better of Brown. In the second, Haley would again mix it up, this time with Scott Arnold after provoking a fight with Pirates enforcer Joel Rechlicz. Meanwhile, Whale goaltender Cameron Talbot and Pirates net minder Chad Johnson, who were teammates last year for the Whale, kept the game tied at zero, with Talbot making some great saves on two separate Pirates breakaways.
Just 2:02 into the third, Alexandre Bolduc would end the scoreless tie, taking the feed from Ethan Werek and bouncing a shot off Talbot’s pads for the goal. It was Bolduc’s team leading 9th goal of the season, giving him 14 points on the year.
8 minutes later, Chris Brown would add a crucial second goal, scoring off a Brendan Shinnimin pass to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead that would hold up until the final minute of play. With the extra attacker on, Brandon Segal would get the Whale within one at the 19:24 mark of the 3rd, but that was all as the Pirates held on for the victory.
Crucial to the Pirates success was their penalty kill, which went a perfect 9 for 9 on the night, including killing two double minors. The CT Whale had converted on nearly 21% of their power plays coming into the contest.
The Pirates climbed back above .500 to a 6-5-1-1 record, while the Whale fell a game below .500 to a 5-6-1-0 on the year. Johnson improves to 5-4-1-0 on the season with the win, with Talbot, despite making some fantastic saves, falls to 4-4-0-0.
The Pirates get back to action tomorrow night as they face the Providence Bruins on Military Appreciation Night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland. Puck drops at 7 pm and game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
