Portland Pirates Announce Hall of Fame Nominees
Nelson, Ouellet, Boileau up for induction into Pirates Hall of Fame, presented by Unum
Portland, MaineThe Portland Pirates announced today that Jeff Nelson, Maxime Ouellet, and Patrick Boileau are this year’s nominees for the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame, presented by Unum. This year's nominees exemplify the standard of play that Pirates fans have enjoyed throughout the team's 20 year history in Portland.
Started in 1999, the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame, presented by Unum, was created to honor those individuals who had played a significant role in Pirates’ history, both on and off the ice, and who have excelled in their careers in hockey. In order for a player to be eligible, he must have skated in at least 40 Pirates’ games and, at the time of his induction, have been at least one year removed from playing the game. Since the inaugural class of Andrew Brunette, Byron Dafoe, and Olaf Kolzig were inducted in 1999, 13 other players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, with Brad Church becoming the 16th member in 2012.
Nelson, a 6 foot, 180 pound center from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, was a member of the Pirates’ ’93-94 inaugural season. During the ‘93-‘94 season, Nelson compiled 34 goals and 73 assists, for a total of 107 points, setting the team’s single season assists and points records that he still holds today. Nelson was named the 2nd Pirates captain in team history during the ’94-‘95 season. During his Pirates career, Nelson amassed 124 goals, 222 assists and 346 points, which is second in team history behind Hall of Famer Kent Hulst. Nelson spent time with the Washington Capitals of the NHL during his career, playing in 52 games and posting a line of 3-8-11 in his NHL career.
Ouellet, a 6 foot 2 inch, 195 pound goaltender from Beauport, Quebec, played in parts of 4 seasons for the Pirates. In his second season with the Pirates, Ouellet tallied 7 shutouts for the Pirates in 48 appearances, setting a team record for shutouts. Named to the AHL All Star Second Team for the All Star Classic, which was hosted by the Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center, Ouellet set Pirates records for the most saves in one period (29) and the longest shutout streak in team history at 193:42. Ouellet followed up his debut season with an even better 03-04 campaign, which saw him break his own record for shutouts with 10, as well as setting marks for lowest Goals against Average with 1.99 and highest save percentage at .930. Ouellet spent time in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and Vancouver Canucks.
Boileau, a 6 foot, 202 pound defenseman from Montreal, Quebec, played in parts of 7 seasons with the Portland Pirates, and is one of only 3 Pirates players to appear in over 400 games with the team. Boileau still holds the Pirates record for career points by a defenseman with 206. Boileau’s first season with the Pirates was the 1994-95 season, and saw him post a line of 10 goals and 28 assists in 78 games. After starting the 1996 season with the Washington Capitals, Boileau posted 44 points for the Pirates in 67 games. Boileau spent time with the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings in his NHL career, tallying 5 goals and 11 assists to go with 26 penalty minutes.
