The red hot Portland Pirates extended their winning streak to 4 games, downing the Connecticut Whale 1-0 at the XL Center on Saturday night. Rookie goaltender Mark Visentin registered his first career shutout in the victory, stopping all 28 shots he faced.
The first period the only goal of the game, but it was a beautiful one. Andy Miele supplied the goal for Portland, taking a Rob Klinkhammer pass and deking Whale goaltender Cam Talbot to beat him with a backhand shot. Miele’s goal was his 6th of the season, with the assist marking Klinkhammer’s 15th of the year, and came at 13:04 of the first, with Mark Louis earning his first point of the year with an assist as well. Immediately after the goal, Mark Visentin put in a spectacular save, stopping Shayne Wiebe’s shot to keep the 1-0 advantage for the Pirates that carried through to the first intermission.
After a scoreless second that saw both Talbot and Visentin turn aside a number of shots, the Whale would press the advantage, as Miele took his third penalty of the game. Despite the man advantage, and another 0-5 night on the power play, Visentin stood strong throughout the third, registering his first solo shutout of his professional career, in addition to the shutout he shared with Chad Johnson on November 25th against Manchester.
The Pirates move to 14-10-1-1 with the win, and are extend their winning streak to 4 games while the Whalefallsto 11-13-2-0. MarkVisentin improves to4-6-0, stopping all 28 shots he faced, while Cam Talbot falls to 9-11-0 after stopping 31 of 32 shots.
The Pirates get back to action afternoon, wrapping up a two game road trip when they visit Worcester at the DCU Center.
