Manchester, NH– The Portland Pirates had the lead only once on Sunday, but they had it when it counted most, defeating the Manchester Monarchs in overtime by a score of 3 to 2. The win gets the Pirates their first VIP Cup series win, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, and Service, and moves the Pirates back to the .500 mark on the year.The Monarchs still hold a 2-1 advantage in the VIP Cup standings. The Monarchs would get on the board first, with Jake Muzzin providing the tally for Manchester. Muzzin’s goal was his first of the season and came at 9:54 into the period. The Pirates would answer back, converting on their only power play opportunity. Oliver Ekman-Larsson would get the tally on a Jordan Martinook pass for his 5th goal of the season, and the game would be tied at 1 at the end of the first. Martinook’s assist was his first career AHL point.
After a scoreless second, Tyler Toffoli would give Manchester the lead with his 9th goal of the season with 7:38 to go in the third. Toffoli’s goal was the 5th against Portland this season, and 4th against the Pirates in the span of a week. Just 2 minutes later, Pirates’ rookie Chris Brown would strike back for Portland, scoring his 7th of the season to tie the game at 2. Neither team would score again in regulation, forcing the contest into overtime.
In the extra frame, David Rundblad would score the game winner for Portland, his second of the season and the second of the weekend, off an Andy Miele pass at the 1:37 mark of the extra frame. The overtime win, Portland’s second of the weekend, gives them a 4 point weekend and 18 total points on the year, good for third place in the Atlantic Division.
The Pirates improve to 8-8-1-1 on the year, with Chad Johnson getting his 6th win of the year after stopping 37 of the 39 shots he faced. Manchester falls to 9-6-2-1, with Martin Jones the hard luck loser, stopping 47 of the 50 shots he faced.
The Pirates get back to action on Friday when they face the Worcester Sharks in Portland at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Puck drops at 7 PM on Teddy Bear Toss night presented by the Portland Press Herald. Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the game, as they’ll be able to throw it on the ice after the Pirates’ first goal, with all the bears being donated to Toys for Tots.
