Portland, ME- Martin Jones stopped 42 of 43 shots to backstop the Manchester Monarchs to a 5-1 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center Tuesday night.
Jones, a 2011 AHL All-Star, was tested early by the Pirates. The first line of Alexandre Bolduc, Brendan Shinnimin, and Jordan Szwarz were twice be robbed by Jones in the opening minute of the game. Tyler Toffoli would start get his hat trick night at 10:33 of the first, taking a pass from Linden Vey and ripping it low past Pirates goalie Chad Johnson. Vey and Toffoli would be at it again just five minutes later, with Vey feeding Toffoli to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Toffoli would cap off the natural hat trick, smacking a rebound out of the air past Johnson at the 11:12 mark. The Pirates would get three power play opportunities in the second frame. However, Jones made several acrobatic saves to keep the Pirates off the board.
Stefan Legein blasted a slap shot by Johnson with 10:52 gone in the third to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead. Slava Voynov would finish off the scoring for Manchester with a goal from the top of the circles at 17:42. Evan Brophey would finally beat Jones and get the Pirates on the board with his second goal of the year at 19:27 of the third.
The Pirates went 0 for 10 on the power play on the night, making them 0 for their last 28 dating back to their November 10th game against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The Pirates fall to 6-7-1-1 on the season while Johnson falls to 5-5-0-2. Manchester improves to 8-6-0-1 while Jones moves his record up to 7-5-1-3.
