The first place Portland Pirates finished off a perfect road trip on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Worcester Sharks 3-1. Portland has now won 4 straight and 13 of their last 15 games to take a commanding 7 point lead in the Atlantic Division.
Brett Hextall got the Pirates on the board, beating Worcester starter Harri Sateri upstairs for his 6th of the season with just 2:36 left in the first period. Russ Sinkewitch, playing in his second game with the Pirates, picked up his first assist, with Rob Klinkhammer adding to his team leading assist total as well. The Pirates held their lead into the first intermission, outshooting Worcester 16-3 in the first frame.
Things got interesting in the second. Brodie Reid tied it for the Sharks at the 12:58 mark, putting a rebound past Pirates starter Chad Johnson. After a heavyweight bout between Joel Rechlicz and Jimmy Bonneau, the penalties came fast and furious, with 3 on 3 hockey resulting. Chris Conner capitalized with 4:40 left in the second, his 7th of the year, and Pirates took the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
The action calmed down in the third period, with the Pirates and Sharks trading shots. Both Johnson and Sateri faced a number of attempts from their respective opposition, and both were perfect during the period. After Sateri went to the bench for the extra attacker, Jordan Szwarz would add the insurance goal, an empty netter to give the Pirates the 3-1 win.
Portland has won 4 straight and now has a record of 23-12-1-1. Chad Johnson improves to 13-7-0-0. Worcester falls to 19-15-1-2, and is now 7 points behind the Pirates in the Atlantic Division.
The Pirates get back to action on Tuesday when they go for their record breaking 9th straight home win against the Connecticut Whale. Puck drops at 7PM and tickets are still available by calling (207) 828-4665 ext. 350 or online at ticketmaster.com.
