Pirates head to Glens Falls for Valentine’s Date with Phantoms

Glens Falls, NY – The Portland Pirates enter the home stretch of the season with their first game after the All-Star break as they travel to Glens Falls to face the Adirondack Phantoms on Friday night. Puck drops at 7 PM for the only visit to Glens Falls this season and the first of two games against the Phantoms this weekend.

The Pirates’ last game was Saturday, prior to the All-Star break, when the Pirates faced the Hershey Bears. Despite a great effort by the Pirates, they dropped a 2-1 decision as the Bears won their 10th straight game at home. Brandon Yip had the Pirates goal, his 5th of the year, while Brandon Gormley and Tobias Rieder had assists. Louis Domingue made 34 saves in the loss.

The Phantoms last played on Sunday, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in Bridgeport. Despite 31 Phantoms’ shots on goal, Anders Nilsson made 27 saves while Bridgeport beat Cal Heeter 5 times on 26 shots for the win. Kris Newbury, Tye McGinn, Oliver Lauridsen, and Petr Straka had the Phantom’s goals.

This is the first of two meetings between the Pirates and Phantoms this season and this weekend, with the Pirates hosting the Phantoms on Sunday afternoon. Portland opened the 2012-13 season at Adirondack and went 2-2 against the Phantoms last season. The Pirates and Phantoms last played in Adirondack on March 24th, 2013, a 4-2 win by the Phantoms that saw Jordan Martinook and Brendan Shinnimin score for the Pirates. Mark Visentin was in net for that game, stopping 14 of the 18 shots he faced in the loss.

The Pirates will have reinforcements for the next two weeks, as Tim Kennedy and Connor Murphy were reassigned by the Phoenix Coyotes during the Olympic Break. Kennedy has played in 37 games with Phoenix this year, tallying 2 goals and 6 assists, while Murphy has played 26 games with the Coyotes and 18 with the Pirates this season.

: The Pirates have 29 games remaining starting tonight after a 4 day break for the All-Star Classic. In order to make a push for the playoffs, Portland will need to have a strong start to tonight’s game not only to get the victory tonight, but to set the tone for the next 10 weeks.
