The Portland Pirates saw their season long 6 game win streak come to an end, falling to the Manchester Monarchs by a 5-3 score on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Monarchs tied the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, & Service, at 3 games apiece.
The Pirates were given an opportunity early, as Jake Muzzin was called for tripping, but the Monarchs would capitalize. Dwight King notched a shorthanded goal at 4:52 into the first to give the Monarchs the lead. The Pirates responded with a shorthanded goal of their own, with Rob Klinkhammer doing the honors. Klinkhammer’s 8th goal of the year came at 8:02 in the first, tying the game. However, the lead was short lived as Tyler Toffoli scored his 6th goal against the Pirates this season, a power play 36 seconds later. The score remained the same for the rest of the period, with the only major action centering on Darian Dziurzynski and Nick Deslauriers dropping the gloves at the 16:26 mark.
In the second, Manchester extended their lead after an Ethan Werek goal was disallowed on a kick. Linden Vey scored Manchester’s 2nd power play goal of the night at the 7:05 mark of the second. The Monarchs almost took a two goal lead into the intermission, but Ethan Werek converted on the power play with just 1.2 seconds left in the period and Pirates entered the third trailing by 1. It was Werek’s 5th goal of the game.
The third period was filled with intensity, and again the Monarchs struck first. Tyler Toffoli got his second goal of the game, beating goaltender Chad Johnson to put Manchester up 4-2 at the 17:17 mark. Less than a minute later, Andy Miele scored his 4th goal in as many games to bring the Pirates within one. With Johnson on the bench and the Pirates pressuring, Manchester goaltender Peter Mannino stood strong, and Tyler Toffoli sealed the victory for the Monarchs with an empty netter, his 3rd goal of the game and second hat trick against Portland this year. Toffoli leads all Pirates opponents this year having scored 8 goals in 7 games against Portland.
With the loss, Portland’s 6 game win streak was snapped and the Monarchs tie the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires & Service at 3 games apiece. Manchester went 3 for 6 on the power play for the night, while the Pirates went 1 for 6 on the man advantage.
The Pirates fall to 16-11-1-1 while the Monarchs improve to 13-12-2-2. Chad Johnson took the loss for the Pirates, falling to 10-6-0 after stopping 33 of 37 shots. Peter Mannino, in his first game against his old team, stopped 27 of 39 shots for the win.
The Pirates get back to action on Thursday when they face the Providence Bruins at the Cumberland County Civic Center in the first game of a 3 game holiday home stretch. Ticketsare still available by calling (207) 828-4665 ext. 350 or online at ticketmaster.com.
