Pirates Sign Selleck, Hanley for 2014-15

Team Adds Grit and More Defensive Depth

Saco, ME – The Portland Pirates today announced the signings of forward Eric Selleck and defenseman Joel Hanley for the 2014-15 season. Selleck has agreed to a one-year AHL contract, while Hanley has signed a one-year, two-way AHL deal.

Selleck, a 6-foot-2, 200 pound forward from Spencerville, Ontario, is entering his fifth season of professional hockey. The 26 year-old has played in 258 regular season AHL games, scoring 21-37-58. The gritty forward has also amassed 762 penalty minutes over that time. He also skated in 18 Calder Cup playoff games, chipping in with one assist.

Selleck has played two NHL games in his career, both during the 2012-13 season with the Florida Panthers. He notched an assist and 17 PIM.

The tough left winger split last season between the San Antonio Rampage and Chicago Wolves. In total, Selleck played 60 games last season, tallying 6-6-12 with 163 PIM. He also played in nine playoff games last season with Chicago, notching an assist.

Selleck made his professional debut with the Rochester Americans during the 2010-11 season. He joined San Antonio in 2011-12 and played there until he was a part of an NHL trade between San Antonio’s parent club, Florida, and Chicago’s parent club, the St. Louis Blues, on March 2.

Prior to turning pro, Selleck played two seasons of NCAA hockey with the Oswego State Lakers (Division III) from 2008-10. He was named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year in 2008-09 and SUNYAC Most Valuable Player in 2009-10.

Hanley, a 23 year-old from Keswick, Ontario, made his professional debut with the Pirates toward the end of last season on an Amateur Tryout Contract. The 6-foot-1, 195 pound defenseman played in 15 games and notched five assists.

Hanley played his first pro game on March 12 at Mile One Centre against the St. John’s IceCaps and registered his first pro point on March 29 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee against the Manchester Monarchs.

Prior to turning pro, Hanley played four seasons of NCAA Hockey with the University of Massachusetts Minutemen. While there, Hanley played 131 games, scoring 17-58-75. He was twice named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team, in 2011-12 and 2013-14.

Hanley’s two-way AHL contract will also allow him to play for Portland’s ECHL affiliate, the Gwinnett Gladiators.
