Steve Poapst's career numbers with the Pirates are a testament to his durability and consistently strong play: 454 games played, 44 goals, 151 assists and 195 points. Poapst is at or near the top in almost every Pirates' defenseman career statistic. He is first all-time in assists (151). He is second all-time in games played and points (195). He ranks second in goals (44), powerplay goals (17) and is tied for second in game-winning goals by a defenseman (6). His assist total ranks fourth all-time among all Pirates; his point total ranks fifth. Poapst was a member of the Pirates' Calder Cup Championship team in 1994. He was chosen to represent the Pirates the next season in the 1995 AHL All-Star Game. He was twice voted the "Unsung Hero" Award winner by the fans (1994-94 and 1997-98).

A true measure of his stalwart defensive play came in 1994-95 when he tied for second in the AHL for best plus/minus ratio with +41. His best offensive season with the Pirates came in 1997-98 when he earned eight goals and 29 assists for 37 points.

Poapst was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks prior to the 2000-01 season and is currently a member of the Blackhawks. He played his first National Hockey League game during the 1995-96 season when he played three games with the Washington Capitals. During that short stint, he recorded his first NHL goal. Prior to the 2001-02 season, Poapst had played in 66 NHL games, scoring three goals and three assists and earning 20 penalty minutes.
