Jim Carey started his career in Portland during the 1994-95 season posting a 30-14-11 record, with a 2.76 goals-against average and .909 save percentage. His efforts were honored by the American Hockey League as he was named winner of the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award (AHL's Rookie of the Year) and the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award (Goaltender of the Year). The Pirates also honored Carey with an award as the Most Valuable Player. He was selected to compete in the 1995 AHL All-Star Classic and was named a Post-Season First Team All-Star.

Carey became the Washington Capitals' starting goalie during the 1995-96 season. He posted a 35-24-9 record with a 2.26 save percentage and .906 goals-against average, and received the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's Outstanding Goaltender. He holds the Capitals all-time record for goals-against average in a season (2.37) and shutouts in a season (14). Carey spent portions of his 5-year NHL career with the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, and the St. Louis Blues. He also spent time in the AHL with the Portland Pirates and Providence Bruins. His career came to an end as a member of the IHL's Cincinnati Cyclones. In 1999 he played two games with the Cyclones before suffering an inner ear concussion and never returned to professional hockey.

No other goaltender has compiled as many awards and honors in a single season in Pirates history. Carey and Olaf Kolzig are the only two Pirates alum that have captured a major NHL award (Vezina Trophy).
