Kevin Dineen
Head Coach

Kevin Dineen Kevin Dineen returns to the Portland Pirates for his fifth season as head coach. During his tenure with the Pirates Dineen has compiled a 174-107-16-23 record for a .605 winning percentage, the best in franchise history, ahead of legendary Pirates Hall of Fame coach and current Nashville Predators head coach Barry Trotz. As Portland's head coach, Dineen has led the Pirates to two Eastern Conference Finals, coming within one win of advancing to the Calder Cup Finals each time. Last season represented Dinnen's first season as head coach of Buffalo's primary player development affiliate in the American Hockey League. He led the team to a third place finish in the Atlantic Division with a 39-31-3-7 record before bowing out to the Providence Bruins in the Atlantic Division Semifinal.

Dineen's most successful AHL season to date was in 2005-06 when he guided the Pirates to a 53-19-5-3 record. For his efforts, the 45 year-old was selected as the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award winner as the AHL's outstanding coach, as voted by members of the media. In winning the award, Kevin and his father Bill became the only father-son winners of the award since its introduction in 1967-68. Bill captured the award with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1984-85 and 1985-86.

Dineen, who was selected 56th overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, played 18 years in the NHL from 1984-2003. He scored 355 goals and added 405 assists for 760 points to go along with 2,229 penalty minutes in 1,188 games with Columbus, Ottawa, Carolina/Hartford and Philadelphia. He is one of only eight NHL players to record more than 300 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in an NHL career.

The Quebec City, Quebec, native appeared in two NHL All-Star Games as a member of the Hartford Whalers (1988 and 1989). He was also named the 1990-91 NHL Man-of-the-Year and was a three-time finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (1995, 2001 and 2002), given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Dineen also represented Canada on numerous occasions including the 1984 Olympic Games, 1987 Canada Cup and three World Championship Tournaments (1985, 1989 and 1993).

Prior to turning pro, Dineen played two seasons at the University of Denver. In 62 career games with the Pioneers he scored 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 points and 178 penalty minutes.

After retiring as a player with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 5, 2002, Dineen spent two seasons working in the Blue Jackets' hockey operations department, assisting General Manager Doug MacLean in player development.

Kevin and his wife, Annie, are the parents of two daughters (Hannah and Emma) and two sons (William and Declan).
