PORTLAND PIRATES INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

2013-2014 Season – Lewiston, Maine

The Portland Pirates are offering a wide range of unique, year-round learning opportunities for qualified students who are seeking to gain hands on experience and training in all aspects of operating a premier AHL franchise.
 
Candidates considered with the following qualifications:
  •  High School graduates, college graduates and all college class levels
  • Demonstrated academic achievements
  • Strong desire for a career in professional sports and entertainment

Term Consideration:

The Pirates would prefer candidates who can commit to the entire season (September-May). However, Fall Semester (September-December) and Spring Semester (January-May) internships are available for all departments. Interns will work Monday-Friday as well as Game nights, with hours varying by department.
Complimentary parking and Pirates game tickets are provided. Internships are not compensated positions (candidates seeking academic credit preferred). Interns must supply their own laptop and cell phone. Attire is business casual.

Portland Pirates Media Production Internship
Media Production Interns will work closely with the Pirates' Director, Communications & Media Relations. The candidate will perform a number of tasks, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Photography and filming  during game nights and player/mascot community appearances
  • Create and/or edit promotional video clips of game highlights and interviews
  • Creation of videos and PSAs on project based requirement
  • Creation and maintenance of video and audio library
  • Player interviews
  • Production of all video media for the Pirates website and social media

 Qualifications:

  • Basic Adobe Photoshop/InDesign skills
  • Basic Final Cut Express skills are a plus, but not required
  • Must provide own laptop equipped with Adobe Photoshop
  • Must be able to attend required home games
  • Working knowledge of iMovie or comparable movie software
  • Owning a camera is preferable but not required

Portland Pirates Game Operations Internship

Game Operations Interns will work closely with the Pirates' Director of Game Operations to ensure that every game night runs smoothly. The candidate will assist with the following tasks:

  • Execute all game day operations for the Pirates including sponsor elements, in-game promotions and theme nights
  • Assist in office tasks as needed
  • Must participate in all setup and breakdown activities for games nights

 Qualifications:

  • College student or recent graduate in a related field: marketing, sports management, communication, business, or theatre/entertainment
  • A positive attitude, professional demeanor, exceptional customer service skills and the ability to work with a variety of people and personalities
  • Detail oriented with time management skills
  • Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience as mascot is preferred but not required

Portland Pirates Ticket Sales Internships

Selected candidateswillbe activemembersofthePortlandPiratesfront office and work directly in Ticket Sales and Servicing.
 
As a member of the Pirates Ticket Sales Department, daily tasks will include balanced participation in:  
  • Servicing new and current customers and accounts
  • Assisting with related database and customer relationship management tasks
  • Executing related administrative and financial tasks
  • Performing game day functions prior to and during all Pirates home games
  • Lead generation tasks during certain times of the year (phone calls, emails, personal visits)

Qualifications
  •  Google Docs, Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Exceptional customer service skills, including phone skills

Portland Pirates Finance and Administration Internship
 
The internship will include, but is not limited to, a variety of tasks and projects as outlined below 
  • Game settlements
  • Management of event/game financial data
  • Reconciling ticket sales 
  • Database management
  • Game day duties
  • Research
  • Monthly budgeting
  • Cash management
  • League operations
Qualifications:
  • Background or experience in accounting preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Quickbooks and Excel preferred

Portland Pirates Communications- Game Day Internship
The internship will include, but is not limited to, a variety of tasks and projects as outlined below:
  • Assist with Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google, and Instagram
  • Track and update all team statistics
  • Game night set up and operation of Pirates Pass Gate, Press Box and Media Services
  • Compile and produce news and notes for all home games, including post-game content and distribution to media outlets
  • Assist with the Pirates photo library updating
 
Qualifications:
  • Writing, editing, and online network/mobile skills
  • Intuitive hockey knowledge
  • Must bring laptop

Portland Pirates Communications- Office Internship:
 
The internship will include, but is not limited to, a variety of tasks and projects as outlined below:
  • Daily web updates (general updates, game stories, game advances, multimedia content, etc.) on portlandpirates.com and several other local sites
  • Assist in the development and production of the Pirates Official Yearbook and Pirates Daily Scroll
  • Organize and manage the Pirates photo library
  • Assist in the implementation and scheduling of the Pirates Advertising Campaigns and Public/Media Relations efforts
  • Assist in the scheduling of player appearances
  • Assist in all radio and television broadcasts
  • Write and distribute press releases and photography, and follow through on story placement
  • Assist with Social Networks such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Google, and Instagram
  • Audit social media and media websites for content
  • Database media articles
 Qualifications:
  • Writing, editing, and online network/mobile skills
  • Intuitive hockey knowledge, especially statistics
  • Must bring laptop
  • Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Portland Pirates Graphic Design Internship
 
Graphic Design Intern(s) will perform the following tasks:
  • Assist in design, layout and production of all Pirates print and online communications and sales materials (yearbook, pocket schedule, player inserts, sales and marketing materials, etc.)
  • Assist in the design and creative development of Pirates print, television, and online advertising campaigns
  • Assist in the design of web and online content at www.portlandpirates.com, and video board, arena monitors, and social networks content associated with game presentations
Qualifications:
  • MAC skills
  • Photography (still and video)
  • InDesign (knowing how to use style sheets is a plus)
  • Adobe Photoshop (color correcting/resizing) and Adobe Illustrator skills
  •  Understanding of current media/communications platforms
