Pirates Take on Providence in Battle for Division Lead
Providence, RI – The first place Portland Pirates will face the second place Providence Bruins at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence on Monday in a crucial divisional matchup. Puck drop is set for 7:05 PM as the Bruins trail the Pirates by only 1 point in the standings.
The Pirates are coming off their first shutout loss of the season yesterday at the hands of Curtis McElhinney and the Springfield Falcons. McElhinney’s 7th shutout of the season saw him save all 28 shots he faced, while the Springfield offense was powered by Wade MacLeod, Ryan Johansen, and David Savard. Chad Johnson stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced in the loss.
Providence is coming off a 3-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs in Providence yesterday, their 6th consecutive win. Carter Camper, Craig Cunningham, and Torey Krug supplied the offense for the Bruins, with each of them tallying a point in their 6th straight game. Manchester’s goals came from Tanner Pearson and David Meckler.
The Bruins have a 4-1-0-1 record in the season series against the Pirates, with a 2-0-0-1 record at the Dunk. Providence won the last matchup between the two on January 25th, a 6-1 decision that saw Krug score twice on the power play and Niklas Svedberg make 25 saves for the Bruins. Portland’s lone goal was a shorthanded tally from Jordan Szwarz in the first period.
