Pirates Snap Bruins’ Streak, Keep Hold of First Place

Providence, RI – The Portland Pirates overcame 9 separate penalties to hold on to first place in the Atlantic Division, defeating the Providence Bruins by a 5-2 score at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence on Monday night. The win gives the Pirates 28 on the season and a 3 point cushion over the Bruins in the Atlantic Division.
The fireworks started early as Mark Louis and Lane MacDermid dropped the gloves 15 seconds in, and the Pirates capitalized on the momentum. Chris Brown got number 13 on the year with 14:09 to go in the first, tipping a pass from Rob Klinkhammer past Bruins starter Michael Hutchinson. Evan Brophey picked up an assist as well and the Pirates would carry their 1-0 for the duration of the period.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the second. Jordan Martinook scored his second goal of the season from Darian Dziurzynski and David Rundblad to double the Pirates lead at the 4:28 mark. Jamie Tardif then capitalized on the power play, tallying an unassisted goal at the 9:13 mark of the second. Phil Lane gave the Pirates a two goal advantage from Brown and Rundblad at the 13:53 mark of the second, roofing the puck past Hutchinson for his 3rd goal of the year. Just 38 seconds later, however, Tardif struck again on the breakaway, bringing the Bruins back within 1 with 5:29 left in the second. With less than 2 minutes to go in the period, Pirates’ point leader Rob Klinkhammer again extended the Pirates lead to 2 off the rebound for his 11th goal of the year. Boris Valabik and Evan Brophey picked up assists on Klinkhammer’s goal, giving Valabik his first Pirates’ point, and the Pirates carried the 2 goal advantage into the second intermission.
In the third, Rob Klinkhammer notched his second goal of the game on a power play that carried over from the second after Maxime Goncharov made a great play to cause a Pirates 3 on 1 in the Providence zone. Klinkhammer’s goal came at 1:04 in the third and would be the final goal of the night.
The Pirates improve to 28-17-1-1 on the season and now have 58 points, while the Bruins fall to 26-17-0-3 on the year. Mark Visentin improves to 11-9-0 on the season with the win, stopping 34 of 36 shots. Hutchinson’s record drops to 5-11-0-1 on the year.
The Pirates are back in action Friday night as they travel to take on the Connecticut Whale at the XL Center in Hartford.
