Third Time’s the Charm: Pirates Start Road Trip in Springfield
Springfield, MA – The first place Portland Pirates will finally get their road trip underway on Sunday when they face the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center. The puck is set to drop at 3 pm as these two teams clash for the 4th time this season. The Pirates will welcome back their captain, Alexandre Bolduc, for his first contest since he returned from Phoenix.
The Pirates have had an eight day long layoff since their last game, as their Friday night contest against the Providence Bruins was moved to Monday night, and their Saturday night contest against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers was postponed to a later date, both due to the blizzard. Portland last played on February 2, defeating the Albany Devils 2-0 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Mark Visentin notched his second career AHL shutout, stopping all 22 shots he faces, and Ethan Werek added a goal and an assist. The Pirates are riding a 3 game win streak into tonight’s contest, and currently have 56 points on the year, giving them a 3 point lead in the Atlantic Division over the Providence Bruins.
Springfield last played on February 2 as well, notching a 3-2 victory over the Connecticut Whale. Springfield scored the first 3 goals of the contest, including 2 power play goals, to secure the victory, with Tomas Kubalik, Cody Goloubef, and Nick Drazenovic tallying goals. Former Pirate Curtis McElhinney stopped 33 of 35 in the victory.
The Pirates and Falcons last faced off on December 19, with Portland notching a 3-2 victory at the Cumberland County Civic Center to extend their season high win streak to 6 games. Andy Miele had a goal and an assist, which Mark Visentin stopped 20 of 22 shots for the victory. Both teams are on win streaks, as the Pirates have won 3 straight while the Falcons have won back to back contests, and both teams lead their respective divisions. Springfield has 60 points on the year to lead the Northeast Division.
The game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
