Pirates hope to Topple Monarchs, Tie VIP Cup Series
Portland, ME– The first place Portland Pirates will be back at home Saturday when they face the Manchester Monarchs for the second time in a week. The puck will drop at 7 pm at the Cumberland County Civic Center for game 8 of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, & Service. The Pirates fell to Providence on Friday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center by a 6-1 score. Jordan Szwarz had the lone Pirates goal, a shorthanded tally, and Pirates starter Mark Visentin allowed 6 goals on 29 shots in the loss. The Pirates took 6 penalties and allowed 2 power play goals, both to Providence’s Torey Krug.
Manchester is coming off a loss of their own, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Connecticut Whale. Linden Vey had the lone Monarchs goal as goaltender Peter Mannino had 28 saves on 32 shots. Manchester sits in 2nd in the Atlantic Division, just 4 points back of the Pirates.
The Monarchs took a 4-3 lead in the VIP Cup last Sunday in a 5-2 victory over the Pirates in Manchester. Darian Dziurzynski and Brandon Gormley had the Pirates goals and Chad Johnson sopped 25 of 30 shots in the defeat. Manchester’s Jordan Weal had two goals for the Monarchs to lead them to victory.
Fans are reminded to wear their seatbelts on their way to the Civic Center tonight – remember, Click It or Ticket! Also, the first 2,000 fans through the door will receive a 2012-13 team photo, presented by the Portland Press Herald and Brown Fox Printing.
Tonight’s game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
