Early Penalties Sink Pirates in Providence, fall to Bruins 6-1

Providence, RI– The Portland Pirates dropped their third straight game, falling 6-1 to the Providence Bruins on Friday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Portland maintains their first place position in the Atlantic, 5 points ahead of the Bruins.
The first period was full of Portland penalties, with 3 separate instances where the Bruins held a 5 on 3 advantage over the Pirates. Torey Krug has the first Providence goal, on the power play, with 16:43 to go in the 1st. The Bruins doubled their score as Carter Camper tallied an even strength goal with 14:50. Mark Louis and Bobby Robins then drop the gloves, with both players attempting to motivate their respective clubs. On the next Bruins power play, the Pirates would strike, with Jordan Szwarz tallying a shorthanded goal on a rebound after Rob Klinkhammer’s shot at the 7:29 mark. Chris Summers, the Pirates’ representative to the AHL All Star game, would also register an assist. However, Krug struck again for the Bruins on the power play, this time registering a 5 on 3 tally to give the Bruins the 3-1 lead with 10:09 left in the first.
The second period saw the Bruins extend their lead late. Kyle MacKinnon registered the goal with just 36 seconds left in the period, slapping a rebound past Pirates starter Mark Visentin to give the Pirates a 3 goal advantage after 2.
Providence kept up the pressure in the third, with Jamie Tardif scoring his 19th of the year with 7:02 gone in the 3rd. The Bruins would add another goal, as Max Sauve scored on the breakaway 2:16 left to give the Bruins the 6-1 victory.
The Pirates falls to 24-16-1-1 and have lost 3 straight for the first time this season, with Mark Visentin allowing 6 goals on 30 shot. Providence improves to 21-16-0-3 on the year, and is 4-1-0-1 against the Pirates this season.
The Pirates get back to action tomorrow night when they return home to face the Manchester Monarchs in the 8th game of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, & Service.
