Providence, RI– The Portland Pirates defeated the Providence Bruins in exciting fashion on Friday night, scoring in the 7th frame of the shootout for a 3-2 victory. Chad Johnson stopped 37 shots for the Pirates as they improved to 2-1 on the year in shootouts, and a 24-13-1-1 record overall.
After a scoreless first, Ryan Spooner got the Bruins on the board in the second. Spooner scored the opening goal on the power play with 15:34 left in the 2nd, with assists going to Aaron Johnson and Craig Cunningham. Darian Dziurzynski tied it up with 12:51 left in the 2nd with his second goal of the year, with Brendan Shinnimin picking up the assist. Bobby Robins gave the Bruins the lead after putting a rebound past Pirates starter Chad Johnson with 10:10 left in the period, but Dziurzynski struck again for the Pirates with 5:46 left in the second to tie the score. Dziurzynski’s second goal gave him his first multi-goal game of his professional career, and the Pirates and P-Bruins ended the second tied at 2.
The third period was again scoreless, with the Pirates killing off a crucial high sticking double minor penalty assessed to Brandon Gormley, and the game would go to overtime. Despite the increased intensity from both teams, neither team could convert on their chances, and the extra frame expired without a decision.
The shootout started with a Ryan Spooner goal and 4 straight saves by Bruins’ goaltender Niklas Svedberg. Chris Conner scored in round 5 for the Pirates to keep the shootout alive, and each team traded goals in round 6, with Ethan Werek and Carter Camper adding the tallies for their respective teams. Chad Johnson stood strong in round 7, however, and Jordan Szwarz would end the sudden death shootout in the 7th round with his 7th goal of the year to give the Pirates 2 points.
The win gives the Pirates 50 points on the year and a commanding 8 point lead in the Atlantic Division over the Worcester Sharks. Chad Johnson picked up the win, stopping 37 of 39 shots in regulation and overtime to improve to 14-7-0 on the year. Svedberg picks up his second shootout loss after stopping 18 of 20, falling to 15-6-2.
The Pirates get back to action tomorrow night when they return home to face the Connecticut Whale for the second time in 5 days. Puck drops at 7 PM and tickets are still available by calling (207) 828-4665 ext. 350 or online at ticketmaster.com.
