Pirates Look for 5th Straight Win, Fight Worcester for 1st Place
Worcester, MA – The Portland Pirates will take a 4 game winning streak to the DCU center Sunday afternoon, where they face the Worcester Sharks in a battle for first place in the Atlantic Division. Puck drops at 3 PM for the 6th matchup between the two teams which has seen the Sharks take 3 of the first 5 games this season.
The Pirates’ winning ways continued against the Connecticut Whale last night, as Mark Visentin stopped all 28 shots he faced for the 1-0 Pirates victory. Andy Miele scored in support of Visentin, who notched his first career shutout. Mark Louis and Rob Klinkhammer each registered assists on Miele’s goal, giving Louis his first point this season and Klinkhammer his 15th assist. The Pirates have won both their games against the Whale this season, and have won their last two road games.
The Sharks, meanwhile, are coming off a victory of their own, taking a 4-3 shootout victory over the Hershey Bears. Alex Stalock made 22 of 25 saves in regulation and overtime, but stymied the Bears in the shootout, allowing Jon Matsumoto to get the game winner in the 4th shootout round. The Sharks scored the remainder of their goals on the power play, going 3 for 6 on the night and improving to 10th in the league on the power play. Their power play will be put to the test today, as the Pirates have the 10th best penalty kill in the league.
The Pirates took the last meeting between the two, a 4-3 victory at the Cumberland County Civic Center. David Rundblad, Alexandre Bolduc, Chris Brown, and Chris Conner would score for the Pirates and Chad Johnson stopped 27 of 30 shots in the victory. A win for either team will put them in first place in the Atlantic Division, as the Worcester has a 13-9-1-2 record in 25 games played (29 points), while Portland has a 14-10-1-1 record in 26 games played (30 points).
The pregame show with Jeff Mannix starts at 2:40 and can be heard on WPEI 95.5 and 95.9 in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
