Pirates Look to Extend Streak, Face Whale in Hartford
Hartford, CT –The Portland Pirates hit the road on Saturday for a quick two game road trip, with their first stop at the XL Center in Hartford to take on the Connecticut Whale. The Puck will drop at 7 PM as the Pirates look to extend their season-long 3 game winning streak that has vaulted them into second in the Atlantic Division.
The Pirates took on the Manchester Monarch at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée in Lewiston last night, winning 4-2 and taking a 3-2 lead in the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires, & Service. Pirates goals were scored by David Rundblad (6th of the season), Brett Hextall (4th of the season), Oliver Ekman-Larsson (7th of the season) and Chris Brown (10th of the year), and Chad Johnson stopped 27 of 29 shots for the victory. The win gave the Pirates a 3 game winning streak against the Monarchs as well as 3-1 record at the Colisée this year. Meanwhile, the Whale are coming off a 4-3 defeat to the Albany Devils, surrendering 3 goals in a second period that saw Albany outshoot Connecticut 17-5. Ryan Bourque, Kris Newbury, and Christian Thomas notched goals for the Whale, and Cameron Talbot stopped 28 of 32 shots for the Whale, but it wasn’t enough as Albany’s Harri Pesonen put away the game winner with under 3 minutes to go in the third period.
This is the second matchup between the Pirates and the Whale this season, with the Pirates taking the first game 2-1 in Hartford on November 16th. Former Whale and Wolfpack goaltender Chad Johnson was the star for the Pirates, stopping 29 of 30 shots in the victory, and losing a shutout with just 36 seconds left in regulation on a Brandon Segal goal.
