Pirates Face IceCaps in Return to Portland
Portland, ME – The Portland Pirates make their 2012-2013 debut at the Cumberland County Civic Center Friday when they return home to face the St. John’s IceCaps. This will be the first time this season that the Pirates have played in Portland as part of their 20th anniversary season, presented by Bill Dodge Auto Group.
The Pirates are coming off a split weekend, defeating the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night by a score of 4-2 at home in Lewiston for the 6th annual Pink in the Rink game, presented by Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute. Alexandre Bolduc, Andy Miele. Jordan Szwarz, and Mathieu Brodeur provided the offense for the Pirates, while goaltender Chad Johnson stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced for the victory. In Sunday’s away matinee, the Pirates were unable to overcome 3 first period goals by the Falcons, as they fell in Springfield 3-2. Michael Stone and Ethan Werek had goals for Portland and rookie Mark Visentin had 38 saves on 41 shots in the loss.
The IceCaps, meanwhile, are coming off a weekend split series against the defending Calder Cup champion Norfolk Admirals, winning the Friday night contest 3-2 and falling on Saturday night by a score of 2-0. In Friday’s contest, Eric O’Dell, Zach Redmond, and Jason Jaffray had the IceCaps goals to support goaltender Mark Dekanich. In Saturday’s game, the IceCaps were held scoreless, with goaltender Eddie Pasquale stopping 25 of 27 shots in the loss.
This is the third meeting of the season between these two teams, and the first on American soil. In a two game weekday series at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s, the Pirates fell in an overtime thriller 8 to 7 on October 23, and followed it up with a 4-0 shutout victory the next night. In the first game, Rob Klinkhammer provided the Pirates offense, scoring 3 goals and adding two assists in the losing effort. The following night, Alexandre Bolduc had two goals to support Chad Johnson, who had 27 saves in the victory for the first Pirates shutout since David Leggio had one on March 29, 2011.
The Pirates will be wearing throwback jerseys from the ’93-’94 season on Friday, presented by Irving Oil. Fans are reminded to bring a donation for Goodwill to the game to receive two free tickets to a future Pirates game!
