Pirates head north of the border for 2 games in St. John’s
The Portland Pirates head to Newfoundland this week where they will take on the St John’s IceCaps in a two game series. The Pirates will play both Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mile One Centre, with the puck dropping at 6:00 PM EST (7:30 local time) on both nights.
The Pirates are coming off a high scoring weekend, tallying 11 goals in their two games. Seven of those goals came in the home opener in Lewiston on Friday October 19th against the Worcester Sharks, where the Pirates tallied their first victory of the year with a score of seven to four. Chris Conner led the Pirates in the victory, racking up 2 goals and 2 assists to help rookie goaltender Mark Visentin earn his first professional victory in his first professional start. Oliver Ekman-Larsson added 2 goals and an assist as well to send the home crowd home happy.
However, it was a different story on Saturday, as the Pirates fell to the Manchester Monarchs by a score of six to four in Manchester, NH. Despite two more goals by Conner, and leading the game on 2 separate occasions, the Pirates were unable to stop the Monarchs, especially on the powerplay. Rookie Tanner Pearson scored two goals for the Monarchs, his first two professional goals, to help lead the home team to victory.
Meanwhile, St. Johns is coming off a weekend at home where they split a two game series with the Adirondack Phantoms. The IceCaps won the Friday night game 2-1, with goals from Maxime Macenauer and Travis Ramsey supplying the offense for St. John’s. In game two, however, the Phantoms stuck back with a 4-3 victory that featured four straight second and third period goals for the Phantoms. Braden Shenn notched two points for Adirondack, including the game winning goal.
The Pirates return home to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee Saturday to face the Binghamton Senators in the 6th annual Pink in the Rink game, presented by Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute! The Pirates will be wearing special pink jerseys to help raise money for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer! Tickets are available at www.thecolisee.com or by calling 783-2009 x 208.
