Pirates take on Monarchs in Game 1 of VIP Cup
Portland, Maine – The Portland Pirates (1-1-0-0) travel to Manchester Saturday to take on the Monarchs (2-1-0-0) in the first game of their season long VIP Cup series (www.vip-cup.com). Puck drops at 7 pm from the Verizon Wireless Arena.
The Pirates are coming off a convincing victory in their home opener in Lewiston, trouncing the Worcester Sharks 7-4. Chris Conner led the scoring for the Pirates with 2 goals and 2 assists, and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson added 2 goals and an assist as well. Rookie goaltender secured his first professional victory, stopping 25 of the 29 shots he faced before a sold out crowd of 3,737 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisée in Lewiston.
The Monarchs, meanwhile, are coming off a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Providence Bruins. Goaltender Martin Jones stopped just 13 of the 17 shots he faced to take the loss. Manchester’s offense was supplied by Robbie Czarnik, Richard Clune, and Tyler Toffoli, who all scored their first goals of the season.
These two teams met twice in the preseason, with Manchester winning both contests. The first game saw Manchester take the victory in a 4-3 overtime thriller at the Portland Ice Arena, while the second saw Manchester dominate the Pirates 7-1 in Salem, NH at the ICEnter.
This is the first game of the VIP Cup series between these two teams. Each team will host 6 games against the other, with the winner of the series being awarded the inaugural VIP Cup! For more information on the series, visit www.vip-cup.com.
