Portland, Maine – The Portland Pirates will make their home debut this Friday as they take on the Worcester Sharks at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. This will be the first of 6 games that the Pirates will play in Lewiston this season, and the first of 36 games for the Pirates in Maine. The first game in Portland will be November 2nd, against the St. John’s IceCaps.
Portland fell to the Adirondack Phantoms in their season opener, 6-3, at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Goals from Ethan Werek, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Andy Miele supplied the offense for the Pirates, who led the game on three separate occasions. However, the Phantoms took over at the end of the second period, and Tye McGinn scored the go ahead goal less than 5 minutes into the third period. Brandon Shenn added two more for Adirondack, one empty netter and one shorthanded, to seal the win for the Phantoms. Goaltender Chad Johnson stopped 42 of the 47 shot onslaught by the Phantoms, but took the loss, falling to 0-1-0 on the season.
The Sharks, meanwhile, are coming off a disappointing weekend where they were swept in a two game series by the Norfolk Admirals, losing the Friday night contest 4-2 and losing 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. Despite a 45 shot effort by the Sharks in the Saturday night game, Worcester was only able to score three times on Admirals’ goaltender Igor Bobkov, forcing the game into overtime. Sharks goalie Harri Sateri, who stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, let in goals to the first two Admirals he faced in the shootout, and the Admirals prevailed. Worcester’s goals came from Yanni Gourde, James Sheppard, and Matt Tennyson, with Bracken Kearns tallying two assists.
The puck will drop at 7 pm as the Pirates host the Sharks for their first home game of their 20th Anniversary Season. For more information or ticket information, visit www.portlandpirates.com, thecolisee.com, or call 207-783-2009 ext. 208.
